How it's made
RÆK
It all start with picking sea glass around the local beaches here at Andøy.
The glass is sorted, washed and put in a kiln that goes slowly up to 530˚C. When the kiln reaches 530˚C the glass shards are taken out one by one and further heated in a torch up to 1150˚C. At that temperature the glass melts and can be stretched into rods. The rods are then melted into beads around a metal rod with a small layer of separator so the glass will be removable later. After a quick sculpt the glass beads are ready to cool down. The whole rod is put back into the kiln at 530˚C and cooled down gently to not shock the glass. The day after the beads are cooled down and can be removed from the kiln and gently loosened from the metal rod. They are then cleaned in water before sorted by colour and size.
Next the glass is combined with silver. The jewelry is handmade in the studio and made to highlight the beads. After soldering, assembling and polishing the jewelry is stamped with the maker's mark of Øya glass studio.
Hanna Karlsen is the creator of the design and maker of the jewelry. She learned basic silverwork specifically to be able to make the RÆK-collection.
